     Position Type: Year Round
    Position Status: Full Time
    Day Shift. Must be available to work weekends and holidays.


    The Head Mechanic, under the supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent, oversees a comprehensive preventative maintenance program. This program includes the repair of broken or failing equipment, keeping records of parts and labor needed to maintain each piece of equipment and placing order for parts and supplies needed for equipment or service. The Equipment Technician schedules and directs work assignments of the assistant mechanic.


    The Head Mechanic is responsible for the following job functions

    • Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical defects in diesel, electric and gasoline powered automobiles, trucks, trenchers, sweepers, rollers, mowers and other mechanical equipment used in utility work
    • Sharpens mower blades
    • Disassembles motors and performs general overhauling
    • Grinds reels and bed knives
    • Repairs carburetors, distributors, fuel pumps, steering systems, starters, generators, universal joins, hydraulic systems and high pressure pumps and valves
    • Installs and adjusts brakes
    • Installs batteries, tires, wiring,
    • Welds and may do some machining work in making filling used in maintenance equipment
    • Frequently makes emergency repairs on the courseAs Head Mechanic there are many preventative measures and additional duties required, but not limited to:
    • Maintain a preventative maintenance program on all equipment
    • Purchase repair parts and replacement supplies
    • Maintain a complete set of records for equipment and parts inventory, purchases of parts, equipment conditions, cost of repairs and preventative maintenance for all equipment
    • Spot check equipment for performance in the field
    • Services or supervises the servicing of equipment in absence of Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, if needed
    • Performs other duties as directed by the Superintendent


    • Working knowledge of light and heavy maintenance equipment and automotive apparatus is required
    • Skilled in the use of a wide variety of equipment repair tools, and the making of various types of mechanical repair.
    • Knowledge of the theory, care, and operation of internal combustion engines, hydraulic systems, and mowing equipment
    • Ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and determine appropriate maintenance work
    • Ability to communicate effectively and keep business records
    • Maintain upbeat positive attitude and act as a representation of what all St. Joe Club & Resort associates should strive to emulate.
    • Willingness to work whenever necessary and adjust to varying business levels throughout the year.
    • Exceptional ability to multi-task, aptitude for remaining poised in stressful situations, and tremendous problem solving skills.
